Born in 2007, Amelia Chen is a 16-year-old student residing in Melbourne, Victoria, with a strong passion for music. Having commenced piano lessons at the age of 5, she successfully completed the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) Grade 8 exam in year 7. Her musical preferences include lo-fi, r&b, and pop genres, and she is presently collaborating with a few friends on the creation of a new pop piece.
My Story
When I was in kindergarten I begged my parents to let me learn piano. I spent my first year of learning on an electric piano my mum rented since she didn’t think I would persist. She was super strict on me that I was only allowed to get off the piano after playing the whole piece five times in a row flawlessly. Even though my experience learning piano was mostly painful, I still managed to win silver in the Liszt International Piano Competition in year 6 and did my ABRSM grade 8 piano exam in year 7, and my grade 5 theory exam in year 3 thanks to my mum.
During the summer holidays in my middle school years, I would play piano at the community hospital every day for volunteering purposes. However, as I started practicing more advanced-level pieces, I found practicing so painful that I quit piano for a year. In year 9, I switched schools and restarted learning piano at school. Having realised how much I rely on playing piano to release my stress and comfort myself during the year I lost it, I cherish my opportunity this time and practice consistently even with blisters and infections on my fingers from rowing.
In 2023 I performed at my school’s annual concerto as the only piano soloist and casually performed at school assemblies. In 2024, I will be doing music as one of my VCE subjects, start preparing for my AMusA, create my own band, and write more songs.
